Matt Roberts is the Managing Director for Venture Capital (VC) Coverage at RBCx, where he leads national coverage for venture funds across Canada. At RBCx, he works at the intersection of finance, innovation, and scale — bringing deep venture capital expertise to help founders and fund managers navigate capital markets and growth strategy.

Before joining RBCx, Matt co-founded CMD Capital, a firm focused on early-stage venture investing. Prior to CMD, he spent seven years at ScaleUP Ventures, where he was a Partner and later General Partner in the firm’s Opportunity Fund. At ScaleUP, Matt was a lead investor and board member for companies including Sonder (NASDAQ: SOND), Solink, Rewind, and #paid. He also served on the boards of Mavencare (acquired), Fusebill (acquired), and MedStack (acquired).

Matt joined ScaleUP from BDC Capital, where he led investments in some of Canada’s most recognized startups through the IT Venture Fund. His portfolio included early bets on Crowdriff, Sonder (then Flatbook), Hubdoc (acquired), Unsplash (acquired), and Crew (acquired), and he contributed to sourcing and due diligence for many other key deals during a pivotal period for Canadian venture capital.

Earlier in his career, Matt joined GaN Systems, a breakthrough Canadian semiconductor startup, where he helped raise the Seed and Series A rounds. The company was acquired by Infineon in 2023 for over $830 million USD. He joined GaN in 2010, shortly after completing his MBA.

Matt entered the venture world at Wesley Clover, the investment group of Canadian tech titan Terry Matthews, where he started as an analyst and later co-founded JohnnyVoIP, a web-based VoIP application platform. In the late 1990s, he formed several Ottawa-based angel syndicates and was the youngest project coordinator at Newbridge Networks, working in the LMDS wireless group (now part of Alcatel).

Matt holds a Master of Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in History and Economics from Carleton University.
